Nidderdale Iron
was a Community Archaeology Project based at Dacre but with interests in other sites in and around the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The main subject area was historic iron smelting and smithing from the Iron Age to Tudor times but inevitably our investigations uncovered other things, including evidence of settlements, other industries and ritual sites, some of which pre-date the Iron Age.
This project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund from 2008 to 2012 but interest continues and new sites are being investigated as they are reported to us or are revealed by our continuing archaeological activites.
