A Pit at Kirkby Overblow

HLFNL_2747 ,48cm Kirkby Overblow HPIM1633a Kirkby Overblow HPIM1648a

A pit, probably for the extraction of iron ore, is indicated by a circular patch of sedge in a boggy hollow. There are signs of other pits nearby.

Slag has been found in and near the gardens at the top of the slope above the pit site.

It is also  probable that ore has been extracted from the slope between these two features but any obvious signs will have been obliterated by agricultural improvements
