After the Norman Conquest Spofforth became the main residence of the Percy family before they became deeply involved with the Scottish Borders and Alnwick Castle. The remains of their Spofforth Castle are still to be seen in the centre of this attractive village. There is record of the existence of two "forges" at Spofforth under the Percys in the 13th century but little else appears to be known about these enterprises. However, two finds have been recently reported by a member the group that could be relevant. They are a dam with the remains of a sluice gate and some slag excavated by animals.
Further investigations are in progress.
